THE POOR STEP CHILDREN

Back when the Unit was formed in 1948 to the late 60s everything we had was an Army or Marine Corps hand me downs. The fatigues were a mishmash of WW2 Marine, Navy herringbone and sloppy Army fatigues. The foul weather jackets were of course used and some in pretty bad shape , steel pots and covers , every piece of equipment was a hand me down. The only new things were boots and fatigue hats, socks and gloves. We had to be able to turn in every piece of clothing except the boots or you paid for it.  There was one med deployment that a DUKW was TOWED into the unit from Fort Story. IT had to be completely taken down to bare metal and repainted for the deployment and the ENs had to work to get it running.  There was a time they towed in three jeeps that the ENs turned into two good ones. We were not the only stepchildren ACB and ACU were in the same boat, they even ended up with some awful looking baseball type fatigue hat. The radio shack, the ET hut, sick bay, the one and only head and the 2 storage shacks for RM and ET were all Quonset huts. The radio jeeps had ANGRC 9(Army Navy Ground Communications Radio) radios that the ETs and RMs jerry rigged to install. This unit was usually very portable with a hand crank generator. Things have really changed, the Radiomen and the Signalmen were the backbone of any landing operation and now there are no more Radiomen or Signalmen. Times have changed. Tom Clancey even mentioned the Beachmasters in one of his books. We have a lot of pride and memories of our service in BMU#2. As the ad used to say ďThe Navy, itís not just a job, itís an adventure.
